For many years the profits were helping to fund camps for Street Children with Scripture Union (FMMB). In 2010, as a recent 3D design graduate Becky Barber (Martin and Mary’s daughter) began designs for new bags and developed the Ravinala and BOO brand. This grew into an established creative brand with designs stocked in over 350 stores across the UK and internationally. Ravinala was regularly able to receive several container loads each year, meaning employment for hundreds of Malagasy, making the baskets and producing all the different materials that go into producing them. She received several awards for her Social Enterprise. Due to family commitments Becky chose to draw the global operations of Ravinala to a close. However, BOO Madagascar still continues to thrive and has helped our staff build houses & boats, and develop sustainable livelihoods for them and their families. The team not only make bags and baskets, but they make school uniforms, items for local hotels, furnishings for the guest houses, etc. The profits now also go towards supporting the work of Lake Mantasoa School. Craft lessons continue and the team are open to take orders. Most skills and talents can be used as long as you are flexible and don't expect everything to run to plan! We live one day at a time and trust God to be our Guide. Previous volunteers have ranged from ages 6-85, and have got involved in many things from gardening, teaching & vocational training, admin & accounting, woodwork, building, sports, medical, music, Bible teaching, teacher training, photography & drone images, water sports, camps, cooking, car maintenance and much, much more. Volunteers have come from many countries too including the UK, Germany, Zimbabwe, Canada, France, Dubai, Australia, USA and South Africa. Some have come as individuals, others as a family, while others have organised teams. Various staff members also used the bedrooms to live in as many had long journeys to and from school each day. The school parents helped make terraces for the first classrooms and many were part of the building team on classrooms 1, 2 and 3. Martin designed the rooms to have as much natural light as possible, as well as an area for shelter and wet-playtimes. We had the space but again, no funds or teachers. So we all prayed again. And with friends giving donations for roofing sheets and furniture, along with a big grant from the Polish Embassy, we were able to build; Classrooms 7 and 8 The Resource Centre, with offices, computer area and library The Director's House The Dining Hall / Meeting Room with kitchens. Visiting volunteers and Nehemiah students helped with decorations. A Trust helped us to finally add rooms for Year 8 and 9 and a new shower and toilet block in 2020, to complete the Middle School of Lake Mantasoa School. We have no plans for a Lycee (High School) yet! Our biggest need is to find consistent funding for the teachers we currently have. Most of all they have experienced this wide range of topics so that they can choose which route they want to go on next. Previous students have become guards, needle-workers, gardeners, teachers, carpenters, cooks, guest house staff, run shops, school helpers and many more. Others have gone back to education and taken further training courses. Many people have contributed to the teaching, including previous students!
